Presenter: Bruce Barker

Bruce holds a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a B.Sc. Physio degree and an M.Sc focusing on dry needling therapy of the shoulder, from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Bruce previously worked in the U.K. for the N.H.S, and now works in the private sector, running two practices within Gauteng’s West Rand area. He sees mainly patients with musculoskeletal problems, many of whom are in the Gold Mining Industry. Bruce has been teaching Dry Needling courses for ODNS since 2002. He is the Chairman of the Dry Needling Physiotherapy Special Interest Group in South Africa, and is passionate about using evidence informed, clinically relevant, bio-psycho-social therapies to help people in pain.

Course Description

ODNS teaches an integrated approach to Trigger point needling and pathology, providing the student with a thorough understanding of the MTrP and how it is affected by Dry Needling.

This online theory of needling course is designed to be completed before attending the 2-day intensive practical In-Person training course.

The online course is presented in combination videos and articles and includes exam questions for each section.  This online portion must be completed before the practical course, and will fulfill written examination requirements for dry needling courses.

  • historical overview
  • the neurophysiology of superficial and deep dry needling
  • ethics, precautions and contraindications
  • dry needling for radicular pain
  • clinical reasoning with the role of agonists and antagonists.

I appreciated the thorough evidence for Dry Needling. However, I wished the course did some anatomy revision as part of the pre-course module
