Course Description:

This course provides physiotherapists and healthcare professionals with a practical framework for conducting a comprehensive initial assessment of individuals with scoliosis. It covers the fundamental principles of understanding scoliosis as a three-dimensional spinal deformity, recognising curve patterns, performing key clinical and radiological assessments, and identifying appropriate treatment pathways. Participants will gain the knowledge and confidence to accurately assess scoliosis, interpret clinical findings, and provide evidence-based education and advice from the very first consultation.

Course Objectives:

1. Develop a foundational understanding of scoliosis, including its three-dimensional nature, curve classification, and the significance of curve magnitude.
2. Perform a comprehensive clinical assessment using validated evaluation tools, including the Forward Bend Test, scoliometer (ATR), anthropometric measurements, spirometry, and clinical photography.
3. Interpret radiological findings by understanding Cobb angle measurement, identifying transition points, classifying curves by apex, and recognising the role of imaging in confirming a scoliosis diagnosis.
4. Apply clinical reasoning to determine appropriate treatment indications and confidently provide practical, evidence-based advice and education during the patient’s initial consultation.
