Course Description

This practical, clinically focused course takes you through the full rehabilitation journey following ankle fracture surgery — from the early post-operative phase through to return to sport and restoration of quality of life.

We will explore how different surgical approaches influence rehabilitation, what to prioritise when patients are still house-bound, and the key elements of Phase 2 rehabilitation, including the transition to full weight-bearing gait. The course will also address regaining strength, fitness, and confidence as patients progress through Phases 2 and 3.

Common challenges and complications will be discussed, including delayed progress, suspected CRPS, wound and scar-healing concerns, and situations where there is fear of surgical compromise. The session concludes with guidance on return-to-sport decision-making and long-term functional outcomes.

Real clinical cases will be used to bring the content to life, with time allocated for discussion and questions.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand common surgical approaches used in ankle fracture management and their rehabilitation implications
  • Identify key priorities in early post-operative, house-bound patient management
  • Apply evidence-informed principles to Phase 2 rehabilitation and the transition to full weight-bearing gait
  • Recognise red flags and know when to be concerned about delayed or abnormal recovery
  • Manage common post-surgical complications, including suspected CRPS and wound or scar-healing issues
  • Develop clear strategies for return to sport and improving long-term quality of life

Clinical pearls in the rehabilitation of ankle fractures

Helene has a great gift for teaching and providing practical information seldom found in the literature. The study case examples personified patients and their struggles and really brought home the message of the value of an individual pragmatic approach to each patient (and their relatives) within the limitations enforced by specific injuries and surgeries. Thank you!
